Brixton!!

Postby Ken Barlow on Fri Dec 04, 2009 10:43 am

Hey you Guys!

Anyone at The Brixton gig last night!? Awesome display from the Guys. The gig last night was the first time I could really hear Johnny's and Ryan's playing mixing together really well live, the sound was incredible. Gary's vocals were also unbelievable!

It was absolutely heaving down the front, it's probably the most packed it's been out of any of the London Cribs gigs I've been to. Only negative was a couple of people behind me say: "Play something we know" after Wrong way to be, and Hey Scenesters. Don't get me wrong, I'm no Cribs snob, and I understand, that alot of people were there of the back of Ignore the ignorant, but I rightly told him to Fuck Off!
I'd like to take off into these woods and get good and lost for a while

It was amazing last night, definitely one of my all time favourite Cribs gigs. Despite being a rather small female, I stayed at the front, about second or third row back all night, pretty much right infront of Ryan the whole time.

I loved them opening with The Wrong Way To Be. Although I also experienced a few people around me complaining that they didn't know the song or that it was rubbish. Its one of my all time favourite Cribs songs so I couldn't really give a fuck about what they thought anyway.

Ryan stage dived right where I was stood, about six or seven people went down and there was a bit of drama trying to get them back on their feet with all the people behind still pushing forward, I managed to keep on my feet whilst holding Ryans leg in the air. The guys were brilliant, I loved the set list, although I was a hoping for some more from the first two albums that was kind of wishful thinking on my part. Nothing is an amazing live, its always been my least favourites songs on the new album but I've found a new love for it after yesterday night.

The sound for Sky Larkin was shit, I think I might like then alot more in a smaller venue with better sound, but I found them quite average. I did love their drummer, he was completely nuts!
Los Campesinos was amazing, I have already got my tickets to see them in Portsmouth in February. I had meant to check them out sooner but never got round to it, wish I had now. I had the singer crowd surf over my head and I loved how they ended their set with them all on the edge of the stage shouting the ending their last song. I really need to go buy some of their music now.

Now have to wait for The Cribs next uk tour, hopefully won't be too long :D

I was right behind Ryan's stage dive! Like you said, he took out about 7 people - very funny!

Fair enough if you don't know any of the older songs, but dont go shouting your mouth off, even more so when you're down the front with the hardcore fans - you just look like a C#nt

Last night was wicked!
Really enjoyed it, stood near middle on Gary's side for 1st half of their set then got stuck in the mosh at the front when Our Bovine Public came on. I thought the atmosphere was really good, everyone around seemed to know all the songs which doesn't usually happen!
I especially loved Direction and Our Bovine Public.
Los Campesinos were also really good, gonna check their albums out as only really heard couple of singles before.

And as a bonus, didn't get my purse nicked this time! Result :-)

The crowd round me seemed to be made up of total dickheads; I was standing at one of the barriers a bit further back and everyone seemed to think that it was ok to just shove past me to duck under the barrier and get further forward/back. IT'S CALLED 'EXCUSE ME', YOU RUDE berks.
Ahem. Sorry, pissed me off a bit. And a circle pit, are you taking the piss?
The boys were on fine form though, bit of a shame that we didn't get Get Yr Hands Out Of My Grave though (seriously, it always happens, that song gets played at other gigs and never at the one I'm going to). The Wrong Way To Be was just brilliant. Loved the snippet of Hello Oh, JUST PLAY THE FULL SONG NEXT TIME, YEAH?
And I had someone next to me shouting 'play something we know!'...er...after some of their biggest songs? I'm not saying you should know every song off by heart, but if you're going to shout something like that, then you should, because they're not playing anything that nobody will know. If you're paying over £20 to go and see them just do Another Number, Men's Needs and I'm A Realist, that's your own fucking fault.
I noticed a few people didn't know many songs off Ignore the Ignorant either, fair enough it hasn't been out a long time, but I was still quite surprised. I haven't really heard of many people getting into them purely off the back of it either, which is quite surprising.
Rant over.
Good gig. Had fun. Love the sloping floor in there.

I missed Sky Larkin, but Los Camp were fucking brilliant. just amazing. I was perfectly happy after they'd played You Me Dancing, and then they finished on Sweet Dreams Sweet Cheeks and I was almost on the floor with joy.

sound was incredible?
the sound last night was incredibly shit
Sky Larkin's set was reduced to just noise, Los Comps faired better because they are a more lively band and pulled something out of a hat, Cribs can get away with bad sound because a lot of the songs are messy but during the slower ones it was shit again
Last Years Snow bored me as the sound rubbed away the vocals which is the main point of the song is it not?
anyway I really wanted to come out last night saying it was the best thing ever but I cant because for me it wasnt
The band played so well and the crowd looked bouncy and sang loud which was amazing to hear
however I couldnt join in due to being in pain and thus not being in the pit killed it for me
felt I was in a bubble watching it from afar
I cant even blame where we were stood because having stood there for many a band I have had a brilliant time
anyway I am a little gutted about not enjoying it as I should have but hey ho looks like so many did and that is what counts
and the band have finally headlined Brixton off their own backs and that is fantastic

after some worry if we were going to keep our phones last night due to the spiked increase in phone thefts we walked out last night to four police vans three with at least two people inside so I think they have caught at least some of the wankers spoiling gigs for others
I did see one unlucky chap walk out after the first song, he was looking for his phone and was so pissed off it had been stolen he told his mate he was off that the gig was over for him

Compared to all the other times I've seen them play with Johnny, I felt there was a marked improvement in the sound mix of Ryan & Johnny - I could actually hear both at the same time which was awesome.

I wouldn't say the sound was anywhere near incredible, especially for Sky Larkin. I didn't find it that bad for The Cribs though, not even during the slower songs, but then again, I was right in the pit so wasn't focused on the clarity of the sound like I may have been if stood further back. It seems like I was quite lucky where I was stood, most the people were great with a couple of exceptions who seemed to disappear a couple of songs in. I have been hearing quite a few negative comments about some of the crowd which is a shame.

In fact I had a look on the Los Campesinos! forum and they have a thread on The Cribs where half of them seem to be badmouthing Cribs fans as if we all have some sort of reputation for being tossers...have I missed something somewhere?! :?

maybe they struggle with people who want to enjoy themselves
;)

last los comps gig I went to there were including us two at the back about five people dancing
was like someone had banned fun
the reception they got last night was fantastic so if we are all berks for wanting to be loud bouncy and fun then oh well its not exactly a cuss is it :P

can I just stress again
band were incredible last night and actually really proud of them
I think if I hadnt of been in pain then the sing backs last night would have probably left me stunned and dazzled
however I have been spoilt already this year with some wonderful cribs gigs so I am not complaining too much

Just before they played 'Emasculate Me' they teased us with the opening verse of "Hello? Oh..." I LOVED that! And especially singing along with a radius of non-fans not knowing the words was sweet icing.

Loved how they opened with a set closer.... marvellous!

I was there,my first Cribs gig :D was mental and brilliant.was great to hear most of ITI as well as older songs.
Was right at the barrier, when Ryan crowdsurfed he jumped literally on me.My neck wasn't the same for about a week but was so worth it! Was on a high for ages after that gig, probably the best i've been to all year.Would've liked to stay after and meet them but had to get the train home.
Also I thought Los Campesinos were really fun too,put so much energy into their set.Skylarkin were good, especially the drummer.
